Brown Canyon
Brown Canyon is the premier trail in the Sierra Vista area. While it’s one of the shorter trails, it boasts
just enough of a technical challenge to be appealing to the advanced rider, but easy enough to
challenge the beginning rider while remaining enjoyable.

The trail can be done as either an out-n-back or loop. The out-n-back option starts in the Brown
Canyon parking area (see
Brown Canyon starting location). From here the ride begins along a dirt
road that generally travels northwest. At the crest of the road, a single track trail begins its decent into
the canyon traveling west. If you are a beginning rider, don’t be discouraged by this technical decent, it
will become easier once in the canyon itself. The trail is fairly easy to follow once in the canyon and
terminates at a cattle trough (this is because of the wilderness boundary that lies just beyond the
intersection you are now at). Once at the cattle trough, you have the option of completing the out-n-
back by retracing your tracks, or by completing the loop by descending down the road to the southeast.

The loop option is becoming more popular with local riders. Typically, the loop is started in the Brown
Canyon parking area (see
Brown Canyon starting location). From here, exit the parking area onto
Ramsey Canyon road and turn right (southwest). Proceed southwest on the paved road until the
intersection of E. Brown Canyon Road (~0.5 miles). Turn right (west) onto E. Brown Canyon Road and
follow the road until it terminates at the same cattle trough as the out-n-back option. From here, follow
the single track down the canyon and back to the parking area. Be cautious as you descend the trail
as it will fork occasionally. If you stay to the right at all forks, you should have no problem finding your
way back to the parking area. Bottom line, keep looking up, down, and around at the area you are in,
and you should remain oriented at all times.

As a note, there are personal driveways along this road. Generally, stay left when you encounter a fork
in the road (if ascending), as a right will take you onto personal property. Also, please respect the
residents of this area by maintaining a reasonable speed when descending and yielding the right
away to local traffic.
